Medical Cannibalism

ELCANIBALISMO PHYSICIAN.

Author: Bernardo Gil Ledesma. Orthopedic surgeon.

"Envy and emulation / relatives say they are / but in all different / the end are also relatives / diamond and coal? (From the book "The mediocre man, Joseph Engineers).

"By God. And to you who operated on him?

"Hey but" Chamba? which he did!?

"That surgery could have been done with a smaller incision?.

"No, I do not know the doctor. Yes will graduate?

"And on whom you ask such a thing happen?

"Look lady, I do not agree, better talk to the doctor who did the damage.?

"Make the call to the doctor who operated and put a guardianship?.

"Whew, that surgery is infected left!?.

"There are techniques for this latest intervention. Is it possible that the unknown doctor?.

"And you made it where the surgery? (Sneer).

"Look lady, the doctor does is very good, but you do put his paws?.

"I'll see what I can do, but I guarantee Medicon, because you will be" pulled? in that knee.?

"That doctor did was very good, was my teacher, and is it still working?

These and many phrases are the so-called "Cannibal DOCTOR?, A legendary and corrupt practice, literally, mean" eat medical doctor?, But actually refers to the unfair competition that some doctors use, either for purposes economic, jealousies, rivalries and innocently or involuntarily "Lengüilargos?.

Every day we hear testimony from doctors who have been victims of these "cannibals? and have had to deal with the claim, usually unfair, patients or their relatives, claims that are sometimes accompanied by violence, instigated by the "beloved? colleague who, usually, when confronted, he washes his hands, denying his guilt.

These direct complaints arise when the doctor has luck but in many cases, patients and their families find a suitable opportunity and already paid by the treacherous comments of his colleague, physician to economic demands, abetted by some lawyers such as birds of prey, are looking for "customers? to advise, as happens in countries like the U.S. where people live and to enrich themselves with medical claims.

Our intention with this article, is to launch a warning addressed to the medical profession, well beaten by the health policies of our country, to be alert and defensive, and left before this resurgent practice, and not allow it implant in our health environment.

We can accomplish much if we avoid these unwelcome and unwise comments which can easily occur in the medical and generate doubts and suspicions. Many of these situations can occur in the doctor agrees that it is unaware of the damage they can do to your colleague. It may be sufficient to disqualify a single unjust act work of our colleague.

Then recount several cases of "medical cannibalism? orthopedists occurred to my colleagues, stating that this is a widespread problem in the medical profession, where there are similar situations:

1. Orthopedist-A: He treated a patient with an impacted subcapital fracture of the proximal humerus with closed method, non-surgical, was the preferred method for this type of fracture. At 15 days, the patient consulted the orthopedic B. This tells you the wrong orthopedic and quickly, the surgical program, practicing osteosynthesis. In the days of the intervention, the lady goes to the orthopedic clinic to complain because, according to orthopedic B, she has loss of shoulder motion "frozen shoulder?, Because the orthopedic not operated in time. The patient asks his colleague to explain, obviously very upset and disturbed by the alleged error that he had committed. The orthopedic pick up the phone, put the speaker, and called to Mr B, for the patient to hear the conversation: "Good evening, Doctor, I call to ask about the patient Jane Doe. The orthopedic B, kindly replied the greeting and then very angry, he says, "Look colleague, this is a crazy old that" crackling as boar?, I think it's psychosomatic. I accused her?. What was his surprise when the orthopedist A Lady replies that he was listening.

Then hands the phone to the patient.

2. 'Another orthopedic colleague, a patient receives a year earlier operated by a neurosurgeon. This is a lady with a cervical disc disease who had made a fusion between two vertebrae, which is not consolidated, producing chronic pain from spinal instability. The orthopedic physician who receives, instead of reoperation, believes it is prudent to send it back where the neurosurgeon for the reintervenga surgically. This infuriates the received and before the patient makes the pantomime that is calling to admonish Orthopaedic and with great cynicism, appears to be calling attention to ignorant and that he claims will not learn anything when it had been his student . The patient, who had good rapport with the orthopedist, returns to his office and apologizes: "Too bad doctor, excuse me for having done his teacher scold?. The Orthopedist, very surprised and upset, he replies that he has never seen the neurosurgeon in his life, and obviously it was never his teacher.

3.-At another orthopedic happened something similar recently, this time with a colleague and well known for "cannibalism? in our guild. He underwent extensive surgery to a patient suffering from a severe pathology of the knee, which, to offer a lasting solution to your problem, it was necessary to realign the knee extensor mechanism, play a partial resection of the patella and distally to a tibial osteotomy to elevate the tibial tubercle and move forward. Any orthopedic surgery knows that this is impossible to perform with the two small incisions in arthroscopy, and so had been put to the patient preoperatively. After the surgery, because the physical therapy had not been sufficient to restore movement, because the patient was uncooperative, partly because of the low threshold for pain, was scheduled to mobilize under anesthesia. The lady leaves the treatment and days later he gets a letter reproaching the surgeon because the orthopedic colleague with malicious comments, said that this intervention could be performed arthroscopically, with "two small incisions?, Not a incision "so great, causing the inevitable disappointment and the claim by the patient and family.

With this kind of comments are generated medical claims, material damage and discredit to the doctor because the patient does not return, and multiplies their comments and in the worst cases, can become the victim of attacks on their physical integrity part of patients and families dissatisfied with the treatment.

Given the avalanche of medical claims that are occurring now, most of them, as reported by Fepasde, caused or induced by a colleague of the same specialty to which he seeks a second opinion, I have tried to define the different types of cannibals as follows:

CAN? BAL "RECKLESS?: He who makes rude comments without any caution. For example, "Hey lady, and you who made this" Chamber?? Comment delivered so coldly, before interviewing the patient.

CAN? BAL "WISE: It's more reflective and" Careful? with the comment that it emits. "That doctor is an excellent doctor, too bad he went so wrong with you?.

CAN? BAL "selfishness?: In this city the only one doing this type of surgery I am.

CAN? BAL "AZUZ?:" Speak up, put a demand that irresponsible?.

CAN? BAL "BANKRUPTCY RATES?: He who speaks ill of a colleague and offers more favorable rates from surgery, showing" terrified? all that will charge OTHER.

CAN? BAL "JUSTICIERO?: He himself calls the doctor in the presence of the patient to admonish and" do justice?, Putting it as a criminal and leaving him as a redeemer.

CAN? BAL "stupefied?: When called by the doctor affected by malicious comments and was surprised, denying his guilt.

CAN? BAL "misunderstood?" I have done everything possible to convince my colleagues to drop obsolete treatments and follow mine, but it was impossible?.

CAN? BAL "UNFAIR?: One who is guilty of several medical claims in their city, for their comments perverse.

CAN? BAL "ACADEMIC?: Ah yes, that doctor was a student of mine, a little slow but eventually learned.

CAN? BAL "Super Disco? PULO: The revenge of the above:" Yes, the doctor was a professor of mine, and is it that he is still operating?

CAN? BAL "MIMO?: Do not speak any, but with a dismissive gesture is enough to make the patient understands that he is disqualified to another doctor.

CAN? BAL "GOLOSO?: It's everywhere, you agree to any fees and charges tomb left and right regardless of their union.

CAN? BAL "Pattern?:" Kneel? to the prepaid or EPS and does not care to discredit or disqualify your colleague to benefit themselves.

Unfortunately, we have to accept that there are isolated cases of "medical malpractice? and behaviors that are at odds with the ethics and honesty, situations that bring dishonor to our profession, and that the doctor is obliged to report, to avoid complacency and silence accomplice who also constitute an act of immorality and irresponsibility.

Most serious of all these kinds of attitudes and comments is that we are blurring and belittling our noble profession, becoming the perpetrators of that society loses the respect they deserve. That patient is present in this feud between doctors, and smith will witness the burial of charisma and admiration for centuries has characterized physicians.

Finally, I will quote some excerpts from the excellent book by William Ospina "It's too late for Man?, Which crudely reflects on what has been the medical history and the bleak future that awaits:

"It's hard to remain emperor to a doctor, says Adriano at the beginning of the novel Yurcenar-and is also difficult to keep the quality of man. Reading those words once I understood the secret fear that inspired me not only doctors, but the scope of its work. The tense silence of the waiting rooms, the desolate peace of hospitals, operating rooms terrible miracle? ....

? Actually reduce both little man to helplessness and powerlessness and the power of doctors. If a man's hand gives us our equal, but if it happens to take our pulse seems that we are at their mercy?.

"Almost no human knowledge gives its possessor much power over others as the oldest and most prestigious medical call know that ...?.

"I had been given the most beautiful of virtues, the virtue to cure, to rapture the mortal flesh of the arms of death and return it to the miracle of the world unscathed. They deserved all gratitude and all worship ...?.

? Were sacred beings who were taking a sometimes rational, sometimes magical, in an enchanted world. In that far distant world where faith moved mountains, where the naive believe in miracles and often did ...?.

Is it hard to remain emperor, and it is also difficult to maintain the quality of man. Almost no one in our time has preserved. Under the watchful cold, dispassionate, impartial science, we are only mortal flesh altered by disease or already trapped by the inexorable jaws?.

"Never mind that the doctor is more or less friendly, more or less compassionate, the mental universe to which it belongs is that of the atoms in that realm fatal and no longer fit or the magic of the mountains of hope or faith or the disorders of the miracle?.

"We thought the world was a world of powers and gods, a tragic garden for beauty and song, but someone has to tell us that there is only blind soulless matter, that there is divinity in the sacred forests or in the water, everything that moved in beauty like the night of Byron, can be transformed into trash and debris, that the mark has been erased unfathomable gods of things and that can now only be on them the mark of the industry, the greedy logos seized the mystery of the world?.
