Presentation in Power comes not from PowerPoint
You speak before a group. You present your message. You could sell your product, service or yourself. How you present yourself with power?
Avoid the temptations
Do not let the name fool you. Precisely because of the name - there is no implied power in PowerPoint. PowerPoint does not transmit the power. Have you noticed how many use PowerPoint and do not have? This should be your first clue. If everybody is doing - is not powerful. Have you noticed how quickly the Macarena faded once vice-president Al Gore has done?
PowerPoint is easy to use software. Seduces you into believing that the presentation is all nice graphics. This is your second mistake. If it seems too easy - is not powerful.
The third trick is that a bad presenter can hide behind their PowerPoint presentation. If you think that, shame on you! If you were a bad golfer really believe that expensive club or a Nike cap (like Tiger Woods wears) makes you a great golfer? If you could skate on the ice you have to play in the Stanley Cup just because you have new shoes? Of course not. Do not make that mistake with presentation skills. Refine the fundamental skills.
The power comes from within you
The only power that counts in the presentation and everything you do is the power that comes from within you. This is true power. This power is recognized. This is the power that allows you to make things happen.
This is the real power, because nobody can take that away from you. They may admire and desire, but can not take away from you. This is what makes you powerful.
How do you transmit the power to your audience?
The first way is to transmit the power project confidence. Stand and look good, even if you do not feel well. Power projection is based on how you look, sound and feel. Over the last ten years of training and presentation skills coaching speech, George Torok, the "Speech Coach for Executives" has discovered that most people seem more confident of what they hear. This is surprising for most of the presenters. And it's a relief. Nobody knows how your inner voice is rebuking.
Even when you do not feel so well - always look good. This works in your favor. Even when you question the confidence the public just does not know your inner doubts. They know only what they see and hear.
Appear powerful
Physics is the first and strongest lights project. Smile. This is the aspect of trust. Smile. That helps build confidence. Smile. This shows that you know your stuff. Too many business presenters make the mistake of thinking: "This is serious business. I do not smile." What a mistake. Any company of people you are. And people like to deal with people who convey trust and confidence. Nothing creates confidence and trust more than a smile. Do not smile like the Cheshire cat - but smile with confidence.
Another physical projection of power is the way you are. Stay away from the lectern so the audience can see. When they appear more open than they appear more credible. Stand tall and strong. Shoulders back and chest out. Looking tall and big as you can. We put more faith in what appears to be big: bigger, stronger, more secure.
Stand with your hands and arms open most of the time. Arms crossed, appear guarded not powerful. Looks like you're hiding something. Keep your hands out of pockets. If you want to see open, open look.
Powerful sound
Your voice is the next component in the power and credibility. Power is the aspect of trust. Seems more powerful when you play safer. You seem more confident when talking slower and deeper - and say less. Speaking slower shows that you are willing to let listeners digest what you say, who have no fear of interruption. Speaking slower also reduces the tone of your voice - that makes you seem more credible. Who sounds more powerful - the slow journey splash of elephant or mouse ran?
Pause more. That shows confidence. It allows your listeners to think about what you say. It's never what you tell them. This is what they convince themselves. And they are convinced, and you are not talking. Do not convince me with your words. They need the silence to think about.
Hum the first four notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Feel the power in those clear simple four notes. Compare that to the running of rap music. Have you noticed that the only power in today's music is slow and deep thud of the base?
Use words of power
Choose words that convey power. Short simple clear words display more power than longer words. Love, hate, grow, kill, stop, go, are more powerful infatuation, ill feelings, cultivation, exterminate, stop, start.
Simple sentences and short sentences have more power than long and convoluted maze vague. Hamlet's "To be or not" has more power to "Our mission is to be the supplier of choice for our customers, show respect for our employees, work fairly with our suppliers, be recognized as a leader in the market and generate a consistently above average return on investment for our shareholders. "
Compare that to, "We are here to win."
Verbs are the most powerful names and more powerful than adjectives and adverbs.
The action is power. Speak against the communications. Are you against implementation. Sell against stress. Those words ending in 'they' are poison. They suck the output power of the message.
You are the power
It may be more powerful when it comes - if you focus on what you say and how you look and sound. Power is a feeling. If the public believes to be powerful by how they feel - they will be powerful.
Do not hide behind PowerPoint slides to save the show or give false power. Your personal power will move the audience to buy into your message. The power will never be the PowerPoint presentation. Rather than exploit the personal power you have within you. This is what makes you credible and convincing .......
